Lights, Camera, Meghalaya! Shillong Sets the Stage for its First-Ever International Film Festival

Shillong is ready to transform into a cinematic hotspot—where stories meet landscapes, and creativity knows no boundaries.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya is set to make a historic entry into the global film circuit as the state prepares to host its first-ever Shillong International Film Festival (SIFF) from March 25 to 27, 2026, at the State Convention Centre.

In what is being described as a landmark moment for the state’s creative and cultural landscape, the festival signals Meghalaya’s ambition to position itself as a vibrant hub for filmmaking, artistic collaboration, and global cultural exchange.

The announcement was formally unveiled by Information and Public Relations Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, who launched the festival’s official logo, website, and trailer—setting the stage for a three-day cinematic celebration.

A Global Platform Rooted in Local Identity

The inaugural edition of SIFF will showcase a rich and diverse lineup of films, including local Khasi and Jaintia productions, regional cinema from the Northeast, Hindi films, and two international features. The festival aims to bridge local storytelling with global narratives, offering a platform for filmmakers and audiences alike to engage across cultures.

Minister Rymbui highlighted Meghalaya’s unique advantage as a “natural studio,” noting that the state’s breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills, and vibrant cultural heritage make it an ideal destination for filmmakers from across the world.

“This is not just a festival—it is an invitation to the world to discover Meghalaya through cinema,” he remarked.

Building the Future of Filmmaking

Beyond film screenings, the festival places a strong emphasis on capacity building and skill development. A series of training workshops and interactive sessions will be conducted for aspiring filmmakers, focusing on key aspects such as direction, editing, and production techniques.

These initiatives aim to empower local youth with practical knowledge and industry exposure, enabling them to compete on national and international platforms.

A Turning Point for Meghalaya’s Creative Industry

While filmmaking has long existed in Meghalaya in various forms, SIFF represents a significant leap forward—bringing structure, visibility, and global recognition to the state’s growing film ecosystem.

With a blend of culture, creativity, and collaboration, the Shillong International Film Festival is poised to become an annual celebration that not only entertains but also nurtures talent and fosters meaningful artistic exchange.

As the countdown begins, Shillong is ready to transform into a cinematic hotspot—where stories meet landscapes, and creativity knows no boundaries.
