Shillong’s Café Culture: A Beloved Part of the City’s Soul

Shillong cafés mirror the city itself — youthful yet wise, restless yet rooted.

By Gavrila Sohliya

We’ve all heard it, from people promoting food on social media and your friends and family calling for a get-together at a fancy restaurant or a new café. It’s the people of Shillong who keep these food businesses alive—bringing warmth to every table through conversations shared over hearty meals.

With various cuisines and aesthetics, the people here are enthusiastic in trying them all. It has become a living space of love, work, connection and appreciation. People connect through these cafes across the town, be it an interview for a job,  meeting your clients, catching up with your loved ones; these cafes have it all.

Perhaps it’s the aesthetics that first draw them in, but it’s the little things—like a dessert that quietly stole their heart—that linger in memory, turning the café into a place forever special. Who can resist a cozy haven that tucks itself snuggly into the folds of your comfort?

When one becomes indecisive of how to spend their leisure time, their minds naturally drift to trying a new dish from a café. Beyond the food they serve, some cafés offer a quiet kind of solace—where the view soothes the eyes and the ambiance gently pulls you out of the dullness of your room, into a space where you can work in peace with a warm cup of coffee in hand.

For the students and young creatives, cafés like ML 05, The Grub, or Café Shillong Heritage are more than places to eat — they are extensions of personality. With indie playlists, soft-glow lighting, and Instagrammable corners, these cafés serve as quiet escapes between college lectures or buzzing hubs for late-night debates over caffeine and poetry. Macrame hangings, open mics, and Himalayan blends make the experience as aesthetically curated as their study notes.

But walk a little further, and you’ll stumble upon cafés that feel like time stood still — warm wood interiors, mellow music from the ’60s, and the smell of strong filtered coffee that reminds one of Sunday afternoons.

For the older crowd, places like Pinewood Hotel’s café corner, Dylan’s Café (with its Bob Dylan nostalgia), or smaller, tucked-away teashops provide familiarity. No filters. No pretensions. Just soulful tea, a newspaper, and the quiet murmur of old friends reminiscing.

Shillong cafés mirror the city itself — youthful yet wise, restless yet rooted. Whether you’re a student chasing deadlines or an elder chasing memories, there’s a table somewhere waiting — with a warm cup and a story of its own.
