10 Groups Slam Govt Over MRSSA, Border Inaction

The groups expressed skepticism over the Chief Minister’s assurances and criticized the administration for stalling ground-level execution.

SHILLONG: The Conrad K. Sangma government is facing sharp criticism from ten major Meghalaya pressure groups over delays in implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and perceived inaction on border protection.

Leaders from organizations including the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Jaintia Students Union (JSU), Garo Students Union (GSU), and others met with the Chief Minister to express their concerns.

HNYF President Sadon Blah accused the government of being too intimidated by the High Court and central authorities to enforce the law, arguing that the state has misunderstood the court’s mandate and failed to justify entry checks under MRSSA.

He dismissed confusion over Form 4 and the 2022 Amendment, stating that converting checkpoints into 31 entry-exit points is standard practice elsewhere.

FKJGP President Dundee Cliff Khongsit issued a 30-day ultimatum for the government to present a concrete action plan, accusing it of weakening the legislation since its adoption in 2016.

The groups expressed skepticism over the Chief Minister’s assurances and criticized the administration for stalling ground-level execution.

Beyond influx control, the coalition demanded urgent action on interstate and international border disputes, warning the government that civil society will not wait for crises before taking to the streets.

The groups called for strict, proactive vigilance to defend Meghalaya’s territorial interests.
