SHILLONG: The All Meghalaya Truck Owner and Driver Welfare Association (AMTODWA) has claimed that as many as 53 non-tribal truck owners are operating with companies in East Jaintia Hills district.

According to the association, the figure was revealed after it obtained information through an RTI from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

AMTODWA leaders urged the JHADC authorities to reduce the engagement of trucks from outside the state and provide more opportunities to trucks from Meghalaya to transport goods within and outside the state.

The association’s Vice-President, Dapkupar Nongrum, and  Secretary W. Warlapih also sought clarification from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) regarding designated truck parking areas along the National Highway from Jorabat to Ratacherra.

The NHIDCL informed the association that designated resting and parking areas for truck drivers have been provided along the highway.
