Not Just an Alliance: One Northeast Is a Political Thought, Says James Sangma

James expressed optimism that the “One Northeast” vision will eventually bring together diverse political voices under a shared framework

SHILLONG: Former Minister and NPP leader James PK Sangma has underscored the growing momentum behind the “One Northeast” movement, a political initiative spearheaded by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, aimed at fostering unity among leaders and parties across the region.

Speaking to media persons, Sangma said the movement is already taking shape, with several prominent leaders from across the Northeast beginning to align with its vision. He cited the example of Assam political leader Daniel Langthasa, who has joined hands with the initiative, describing it as part of a broader effort to bring the region under a common political platform.

“As we speak, One Northeast is taking shape. Leaders from different states are coming together. This is part of a larger narrative where all of us must unite and work collectively,” Sangma said.

He emphasized that the core idea behind the movement is to create a unified voice capable of representing the interests of the entire Northeast at a larger political level. “In unity lies our strength. The goal is to have one platform and a single voice for the region,” he added.

Clarifying that the initiative is not merely about forming alliances or branding, Sangma described “One Northeast” as a political thought rather than a formal structure. “The name is not important—it is the ideology and the thought process that matter. This is about action, and that action has already begun,” he said.

According to him, the movement is still a work in progress, but it has already generated significant interest among political leaders across the Northeast. He noted that several influential figures from different states have expressed willingness to join the initiative, with more expected to come on board after ongoing electoral processes conclude.

Sangma also highlighted that the movement seeks to address a longstanding sense of neglect often felt in the region due to fragmented political representation. “There is a growing realisation among the people of the Northeast that unless we stand united, we will continue to feel sidelined,” he said.

He further revealed that efforts are currently underway to expand the reach of the initiative, as many regional parties and leaders are still being approached and informed about the movement.

“We are in the process of reaching out to as many leaders and parties as possible. Many may not yet be fully aware of the One Northeast movement, but we are confident that the idea will resonate widely,” Sangma stated.

Reiterating that the initiative is evolving organically, he expressed optimism that the “One Northeast” vision will eventually bring together diverse political voices under a shared framework focused on regional unity and collective progress.
