SHILLONG: An ACHIK NGO member died after being assaulted by unidentified persons at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills district on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, the incident was reported at around 2:00 pm on January 9, 2026. The victim, Dilseng M. Sangma, resident of Amokgre village in the Phulbari area of the district, sustained critical injuries in the attack. He was initially rushed to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being taken there.
Police teams have been deployed to trace those involved in the assault, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Rajabala MLA Mizanur R Kazi said he has requested the district administration to put in place preventive measures to prevent any deterioration of the law and order situation. He said steps such as imposing a night curfew and temporarily suspending internet services are being considered, and informed that a peace committee meeting will be held on Friday.
The MLA conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family and said he strongly condemned the incident.
He stated that the district administration and elected representatives are working closely to maintain peace and stability in the area, and assured that strict action would be taken against those attempting to disrupt communal harmony as well as against the culprits involved in the crime.
Earlier, the district police appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony and urged people not to circulate or share any unverified or provocative content related to the incident on social media, warning that such actions could disturb communal harmony in the district. A Peace Committee is also being initiated by the district administration.
The public has been requested to cooperate with the investigation and share any information related to the incident, the perpetrators, or any suspicious activities with the nearest police station, outpost, beat house, or the Police Control Room in Tura.
