SHILLONG: The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) has set a firm condition ahead of crucial talks with the state government scheduled for September 8, 2026, demanding that at least 70% of its key grievances be resolved or face intensified agitation.
The association, which represents tourist taxi operators across Meghalaya, convened an emergency meeting to prepare for the dialogue and directed drivers and district representatives to assemble at the State Central Library in Shillong to await the outcome.
AKMTTA President Ricaldinus Dohling emphasized that the association’s long-standing demand is to restrict the unchecked entry of Assam-registered commercial tourist taxis into Meghalaya’s major tourist destinations, a practice they say has deprived local drivers of vital livelihood opportunities for three years.
The association is calling for routes to tourist spots to be reserved for local operators to boost employment for Meghalaya’s youth.

The upcoming dialogue will include cabinet ministers, transport officials from Assam and Meghalaya, and AKMTTA representatives.
While the association originally sought complete compliance with its demands, Dohling said AKMTTA is open to a peaceful resolution if at least 70% of their demands are met.
If not, or if the government seeks further delays, the association is prepared to immediately launch a renewed and intensified agitation.
