SHILLONG: Prof. K. C. Biswal, who recently assumed temporary charge as Registrar of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), was allegedly attacked by masked miscreants during his visit to the university campus on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to reporters, Biswal said he had travelled to the university soon after taking charge as Registrar to ensure that development funds allotted to the institution are properly utilised before the end of the current financial year on March 31.

He stated that the atmosphere on the campus appeared tense during his visit and claimed that some students had opposed his presence. According to Biswal, a few students openly told him they would not support him. In response, he said he informed them that he would return to Guwahati.

Recalling the alleged assault, Biswal said that while he was leaving the campus, a group of masked miscreants intercepted his vehicle near ISBT Mawiong. He alleged that the attackers assaulted him and struck his head with stones.

Biswal further said he sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to hospital, where doctors treated him and administered eight stitches to his head.

Further investigation into the incident is awaited.
