‘No More Random Candidates’: BJP Changes Strategy for GHADC Polls

The BJP has launched political surveys and an extensive membership drive to strengthen its organisational base across the Garo Hills.

BJP Leader AL Hek

SHILLONG: Senior BJP leader and Cabinet Minister A.L. Hek has indicated a major shift in the party’s strategy for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, stating that the BJP will focus on fielding only strong and credible candidates rather than contesting all seats.

Speaking to reporters, Hek said the party may not contest all 29 seats in the GHADC elections, opting instead for a selective and winnability-based approach. Acknowledging past shortcomings, he said the BJP is determined to avoid repeating mistakes made in previous elections.

“We do not want to repeat the mistakes of the past by picking candidates randomly. We have to be very careful this time. It will be a straight and tough contest against all political parties,” Hek said.

He said the party has begun a rigorous internal screening process to identify capable candidates with strong grassroots support. Simultaneously, the BJP has launched political surveys and an extensive membership drive to strengthen its organisational base across the Garo Hills.

Hek said the post-festive period marks the beginning of intensive preparations for the GHADC polls, with the party focusing on strategy, cadre mobilisation and ground-level assessment.

Political observers view this calibrated approach as a significant shift for the BJP in the Garo Hills, where it is aiming to improve its electoral performance and emerge as a serious contender against the NPP, TMC and Congress.
