SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s political landscape has undergone a significant shift after eight United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), boosting the BJP’s presence in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for the first time in eight years.
The move has resulted in the BJP gaining two MDCs: Synsharkupar Lyngdoh Thabah (Sohiong) and Pius Marweiñ (Ranikor), both of whom resigned from the UDP to join the BJP.
Prior to this development, UDP held five MDC seats in the KHADC from the 2024 elections.

With the defection of the eight MLAs—including the two dual MLA-MDCs—the BJP has re-established its foothold in the council, joining the NPP and UDP as part of the opposition, while the Voice of the People Party (VPP) remains in power.
This marks the BJP’s return to the KHADC since Neil Antonio War’s tenure as the party’s first-ever MDC in 2017 from Laitumkhrah.
The realignment signals a major shift in the region’s political dynamics and strengthens the BJP’s position within the council.
