SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Meghalaya has downplayed the emergence of the so-called Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), describing it as a social media phenomenon with no real political standing.
Speaking to reporters, BJP spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said the party does not consider the faceless online movement a credible political force. He said a growing number of followers on social media do not necessarily translate into an organisation capable of contesting elections.
Kharkrang termed the CJP a “knee-jerk reaction” to recent political developments and maintained that it lacks the structure and organisational depth of a genuine political party.
Rejecting suggestions that the rise of such online platforms points to growing alienation among the youth from mainstream politics, he asserted that young people continue to participate actively in political and democratic processes.
He also dismissed concerns that anonymous online mobilisation could weaken democratic institutions, stating that India’s democratic framework remains strong and resilient.
Urging young citizens to raise issues through recognised democratic channels, the BJP leader said governance “cannot be run on social media.”
