SHILLONG: Meghalaya has recorded a total of 23,530 completed self-enumerations as part of the ongoing Census exercise, with the figures expected to rise further as the self-enumeration window remains open until midnight on May 15.
Providing a district-wise breakdown, the Director of Census Operations in Meghalaya, Biswajit Pegu, stated that West Khasi Hills registered the highest number of completed self-enumerations with 4,973 entries, followed closely by East Khasi Hills with 3,967 entries.
He noted that while other districts have also performed well, certain border districts faced specific difficulties in carrying out the self-enumeration process, which may have impacted their overall numbers.
Highlighting the preparatory work, Pegu announced that all 12 districts in the state have completed 100 percent geo-tagging of landmarks, as well as the creation and demarcation of house-listing blocks. He added that the department will be engaging 8,309 enumerators and supervisors for the ground exercise, emphasizing that ensuring they are well-trained is crucial.
The training at all administrative levels has already been successfully completed.
Describing the enumerators and supervisors as the main warriors who will be heading into the field for door-to-door data collection, Pegu confirmed that they are now fully trained and ready to begin the house-listing enumeration starting tomorrow.
The House Listing exercise is scheduled to be conducted over a 30-day period, running from May 16 to June 14.
According to data provided by the Directorate of Census Operations Meghalaya, as of May 13, 2026, the state comprises 12 districts, 56 Community and Rural Development (C&RD) blocks, nine statutory towns, seven census towns, and one urban agglomeration. The state also encompasses 7,428 villages and 9,950 House Listing Blocks.
