BJP Targets INDIA Bloc Over Meghalaya Voter Roll Revision

He accused the Congress and TMC of aiding infiltrators’ inclusion in voter lists and resisting scrutiny through the revision process.

SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has escalated its offensive against Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and other INDIA bloc partners over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, accusing the opposition of protecting illegal infiltrators for political gain.

BJP North East Joint Co-ordinator Rajiv Babbar, addressing reporters in Shillong, questioned whether Meghalaya’s people want a Chief Minister elected with the support of foreign nationals, bringing the issue of illegal immigration into the state’s political spotlight.

Babbar, as part of the BJP’s “Loktantra Bachao, Aarakshak Hatao” campaign, dismissed opposition claims as misinformation and emphasized that the SIR is a constitutional exercise mandated by the Election Commission under Article 324.

He noted that such revisions have taken place under previous Congress governments and challenged current opposition objections.

Responding to concerns about changes affecting 13 crore voters, Babbar said differences in voter counts are due to legitimate factors like deaths, duplicates, and migration.

He accused the Congress and TMC of aiding infiltrators’ inclusion in voter lists and resisting scrutiny through the revision process.

Babbar clarified that the temporary requirement for voters to declare their residence prior to 2004 is not a permanent change and will be removed after the SIR.

He assured that all eligible citizens can enroll even after the revision concludes, and accused the opposition of manufacturing controversy due to a lack of response to Prime Minister Modi’s development agenda.
