SHILLONG: A renewed clash between the Khasi-Pnar and Karbi communities in the disputed Lapangap area of West Jaintia Hills has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries today. The violence erupted as Khasi-Pnar residents were harvesting paddy along the inter-state border with Karbi Anglong.
The deceased has been identified as Orivel Timung, 45, from Tahpat village in Karbi Anglong.
The incident occurred this evening, though community members from both sides were initially allowed to access their agricultural fields under security supervision earlier in the day.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated: “In the morning, based on mutual understanding from the police forces of both sides, the residents were allowed to go to their fields. However, within three to four hours of them working, some individuals from the other side emerged and created a commotion in the area, and in this commotion, one person died.”
The Deputy CM noted that police were present when the scuffle began, but the mob’s sudden appearance led to the uncontrollable situation.
Night Curfew Imposed
Following the fatal clash, the governments of both states have taken coordinated action to prevent further escalation.
“The police forces were at the location when the incident occurred, but due to the unexpected flashpoint, they could not prevent the violence. To ensure peace and order, the Government from both sides has now imposed a night curfew in the area,” Tynsong added.
Focus on Border Resolution
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed that the recurring violence is directly linked to the unresolved nature of the area’s boundary.
Regarding the process of border resolution, Tynsong said that the Regional Committee has already completed its primary work. He emphasised the critical need for leaders of the Regional Committees from both states to meet, hold public consultations, and promote an environment of peace among the villagers.
”The continuation of clashes in the border areas is solely because this place is still an unresolved Area of Difference. Therefore, it is essential to promote understanding and maintain peace until the government can definitively resolve the boundary,” he said.
