SHILLONG: A routine traffic dispute in Shillong escalated into a serious case of alleged road rage after a driver was reportedly assaulted and threatened with a firearm on the evening of March 27.
The victim, identified as Shanskhemborlang Laitmiet, stated that the incident occurred amid heavy traffic congestion, where vehicles had occupied up to four lanes. According to his account, he was attempting to move toward Anjali Pump and had carefully aligned his vehicle into the correct lane, briefly reversing to adjust to the flow of traffic.
However, another driver allegedly obstructed his path and initiated a confrontation. What began as a verbal altercation quickly spiraled into a tense exchange, during which the accused reportedly brandished a pistol concealed in his trousers, using it to intimidate Laitmiet.
Sensing the danger, the victim said he tried to remain calm and de-escalate the situation. Despite this, the accused allegedly grew more aggressive, physically assaulting him and hurling abusive language. Even as Laitmiet attempted to disengage and return to his vehicle, the attacker reportedly continued the assault.
Crucially, a passenger seated beside the victim recorded the entire incident on video, which may serve as key evidence in the investigation.
Fearing for his safety, Laitmiet approached nearby police personnel, who escorted him to the Jhalupara outpost for necessary formalities. He was later referred for a medical examination to assess his injuries.
Condemning the incident, the victim’s family expressed deep concern over the rising trend of road rage and the alarming ease with which minor disputes escalate into violent confrontations. They also raised serious questions about the use of firearms in public spaces, warning that such acts pose a grave threat to public safety.
Echoing similar sentiments, the Sohra–Shillong Driver Association strongly denounced the incident. The association stated that while minor errors are inevitable in daily commuting, resorting to violence and intimidation is unacceptable. It also highlighted the alleged misuse of power or influence by certain individuals as a contributing factor.
Calling for strict legal action, the association urged authorities to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills Police informed that an enquiry was made and it was ascertained that the person on the video is not a policeman as he claimed in the video, but a civilian. “In this regard a suo moto case has been filed and legal action will be taken accordingly,” EKH SP Vivek Syiem said.
