SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday launched a scathing attack on opposition parties, particularly those favoring “street politics” and agitational methods that disrupt public order.

Speaking at a ceremony to officially welcome Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait as the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, Sangma criticized political entities that thrive on creating chaos.

The Chief Minister stated that while some parties are intent on dividing the public and inciting hatred between communities for political gain, the NPP remains a party rooted in love and unity to move the state forward.

He expressed deep concern over parties attempting to mislead the public through rhetoric and misinformation, which he claimed creates unnecessary divisions among citizens.

Sangma further alleged that these parties use street protests and public disturbances as a primary means of expression, a practice he described as being contrary to the principles of peace and democracy. Specifically addressing the Reservation Policy issue and the Voice of the People Party (VPP), the Chief Minister pointed out that despite calling an all-party meeting to discuss the Expert Committee’s report, those who had most loudly championed the cause failed to attend.

He noted that while other parties participated, these individuals stayed away, citing other “pressing engagements” despite their public posturing of concern for the people.

Emphasizing that love for the country and its people must be demonstrated through actions rather than words, the Chief Minister highlighted that the NPP-led government has taken decisive steps on issues that previous governments avoided for 50 years.

These achievements include progress on the state boundary dispute, the adoption of the State Anthem and Emblem, and the declaration of Khasi and Garo as official languages of the state.

Sangma urged the public to remain vigilant and not be misled by parties that rely solely on “shouting on the streets.” He asserted that a victory for Dr. Nonglait would pave the way for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, as the candidate has consistently worked alongside the government to fulfill the people’s aspirations through organized and constitutional means.
