SHILLONG: The state government, through the Tourism Department, on Wednesday honoured a “Tourist Buddy” for his bravery in rescuing a man who had jumped into a pond at Ward’s Lake.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma felicitated Teiborlang Pakma during a programme held in Umiam, recognising his timely intervention and courage.
Speaking to the media, Pakma said he had earlier worked as a sales officer in a bank before joining the Tourist Buddy initiative. He applied for the role when an opportunity arose and credited his selection to divine blessings.
Recounting the incident, he said it took place on November 27 when he noticed a man jump into the water from a distance of around 50 metres. Acting swiftly, Pakma initially tried to calm and assist the individual, who resisted at first.
However, as the man had swallowed a large amount of water and was weakening, Pakma intervened and managed to rescue him, pulling him safely out of the pond.
Pakma said that helping others is a responsibility, especially for the youth. He also highlighted the positive impact of government schemes implemented through the Tourism Department.
He further noted that with a large number of tourists visiting Meghalaya from across the country and beyond, the role of Tourist Buddies is crucial in ensuring visitor safety, providing guidance, and enhancing the overall travel experience in the state.
