SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated the new building of the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School in Umsohpieng, using the platform to underscore Meghalaya’s significant economic progress and reiterate the government’s commitment to overhauling the education sector.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, officials, and community members, the Chief Minister proudly stated that Meghalaya is currently the second fastest-growing economy in India after Tamil Nadu, having maintained a consistent growth rate of 10% per year over the last three years.
Focus on Human Resource and Education Investment
CM Sangma emphasized that the state’s focus on welfare, infrastructure, and human resource development has driven this growth. He highlighted the massive investment in education, noting that ₹3,654 crores have been allocated to the sector, along with grants-in-aid and other institutional support.
The Chief Minister also touched upon ongoing structural reforms within the education system, including a new, structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, designed to strengthen the sector for the next two decades and ensure efficient delivery of education across the state.
Encouraging holistic youth development, Mr. Sangma called upon parents, teachers, and communities to guide young people toward positive engagement through platforms like sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social programs. As a gesture of support, he announced a contribution from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund to provide musical instruments to both Sijun Memorial School and the newly inaugurated Nongkharai Presbyterian HSS, stressing music’s role in brain development and nurturing creativity.

A Milestone for the Community
Meanwhile, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Methodius Dkhar has termed the construction of the new building a “major achievement” for the constituency and the wider community, recalling the visionary support of former leaders like (L) D. D. Lapang and (L) P. A. Sangma.
Earlier, Rev. A. Nongbri, President of the School Managing Committee shared the school’s vision of fostering academic excellence, creativity, and character development. The Secretary, Rev. S.B. Lyngdoh, provided a brief history, detailing the institution’s humble beginnings and highlighting the recent government funding. He also outlined future development proposals, including the construction of RCC fencing, recruitment of additional teaching staff, and the construction of girls’ hostels.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with vibrant cultural performances by the students, celebrating the new chapter in the school’s journey.
