The new MCA President James Sangma stressed that cricket should not be seen merely as a game, but also as a viable career option.

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) President James P.K. Sangma on Monday said that leading the association is a major responsibility, acknowledging that expectations are high following his assumption of office.

Speaking to the media, Sangma said there is immense potential to further develop cricket in Meghalaya and to attract more youth to the sport. He stressed that cricket should not be seen merely as a game, but also as a viable career option. However, he pointed out that despite the abundance of talent in the state, many young players have been unable to progress due to a lack of opportunities, exposure, and proper platforms. Addressing these gaps, he said, would be one of the key roles of the MCA.

Emphasising the importance of teamwork, Sangma said cricket is a team sport not only on the field but also in administration. He called for close coordination and cooperation among all district cricket associations to ensure the overall growth and development of the game in Meghalaya.

Infrastructure development, Sangma said, would be among his top priorities. He noted that the state currently has only two BCCI-recognised cricket grounds—one in Shillong and another in Tura. Stressing the urgent need to expand facilities, he said the MCA would focus on developing more playing grounds as well as strengthening other essential cricket infrastructure across the state.

Another key focus area, Sangma added, would be talent identification and scouting. While Meghalaya has many promising cricketers, he said several players have not received the guidance and opportunities they deserve. He assured that the MCA would work towards making the selection process more rigorous, transparent, and merit-based, ensuring that deserving players get opportunities to represent their districts, the state, and eventually the region.
