SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has proposed that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly designate one day each week as a traditional-wear day, requiring all legislators to wear traditional attire to promote the state’s indigenous textiles, weavers, farmers, and cultural identity.
Speaking to reporters after the opening of the Autumn Session, Sangma showcased his Ryndia shirt and emphasized that such an initiative would help promote Meghalaya’s unique textiles and the people involved in their creation.
He urged the Speaker to implement the weekly practice, noting that members should be free to wear any form of traditional dress.

Sangma highlighted that this move would not only make the Assembly visually distinctive but also provide a platform to celebrate and strengthen Meghalaya’s cultural heritage.
He added that increased visibility for traditional textiles would benefit weavers and farmers, and foster pride in the state’s indigenous products.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the Speaker would adopt the suggestion, calling it a positive step toward promoting Meghalaya’s identity and heritage within the Assembly.
