SHILLONG: In a major boost to state infrastructure and public welfare, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced a significant expansion of ‘Meghalaya Houses’ across five key cities in India.
The initiative aims to provide accessible and affordable accommodation for the citizens of Meghalaya traveling outside the state, particularly focusing on students, patients, and general travellers.
A major breakthrough has been achieved in Maharashtra, where the state government has agreed to allot a new plot of land in Navi Mumbai.
While the market rate for the property was initially valued at a staggering ₹90 crore, Chief Minister Sangma personally appealed to his Maharashtra counterpart to provide the land at the official government rate of ₹7 crore.
The Maharashtra government accepted the proposal, allowing Meghalaya to secure the prime property at a fraction of its market value. Sangma emphasized that his team is focused on designing a highly public-oriented space that will feature a larger public area and function primarily as a guest house to benefit the community.
Expanding the state’s footprint further into southern India, the Chief Minister shared updates from his recent visit to Hyderabad. During a meeting with the Chief Minister of Telangana, Sangma formally requested land for a Meghalaya House in the metro city, which hosts a sizable population from the hill state.
The Telangana Chief Minister has verbally committed to the request, promising favorable terms and conditions. A formal, written response is expected soon, after which the specific details of the agreement will be officially shared.
These developments are part of a broader, five-project infrastructure push by the state government. In addition to Navi Mumbai and Hyderabad, the government is set to begin the construction of a new Meghalaya House in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
To expedite the Vellore project, the existing space will temporarily shift to a rented guest house area while the new construction gets underway. Furthermore, renovation works on the Meghalaya House in Bengaluru are nearing completion, and another facility is being established in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the completion of these five infrastructure projects will bring immense relief and deep benefits to the people of Meghalaya who frequently travel to these major medical, educational, and economic hubs across the country.
