SHILLONG: The circulation of photographs showing former UDP leader and ex-MLA Jemino Mawthoh with BJP leaders at a recent party function has sparked speculation that he may be preparing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Reacting to the rumors, BJP Meghalaya General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna confirmed he had seen the photographs in the media and clarified that Mawthoh attended the programme—commemorating the 125th birth anniversary of the BJP’s ideological founder—after being invited in his capacity as a former MLA.

Pohshna said Mawthoh’s presence at the event reflects a sense of closeness towards the BJP, expressing hope that such interactions might encourage him to formally join the party.

“He has seen how the BJP functions and understands the party’s vision for the nation’s welfare and development,” Pohshna said, adding that the BJP would warmly welcome Mawthoh should he decide to join.

While noting that only Mawthoh can clarify his future political plans, Pohshna reiterated that the BJP would be happy to accept him.

He also revealed that the party is in talks with several other political leaders interested in joining, inviting leaders from across Meghalaya to contribute to the state’s and the country’s development as Meghalaya nears its 75th year of statehood.
