SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday strongly condemned the recent threats allegedly issued by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) against Voice of People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, terming the incident “serious, unacceptable, and deeply concerning.”
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister made it clear that the government will not tolerate any form of intimidation or threats, irrespective of the identity of the individual targeted. He stressed that such actions undermine the rule of law and create an atmosphere of fear that cannot be allowed to persist in a democratic society.
“Threats of any nature are unacceptable, whether they are directed at an elected representative, an ordinary citizen, or a businessperson. The safety and security of our people is paramount. Every citizen matters, and the government is fully committed to taking all necessary measures to ensure proper protection,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain vigilant and respond firmly to any attempts at coercion or violence. He emphasized that the state will act within the framework of the law to maintain peace and order, and that no individual or group will be allowed to take matters into their own hands.
Addressing queries on the possibility of reviving peace talks with the HNLC, Sangma said that the process is complex and involves multiple stakeholders, including the central government and security agencies. He underlined that while peace remains the government’s top priority, any dialogue must be approached with seriousness, preparation, and a genuine commitment from all sides.
“Peace cannot be achieved overnight. It requires careful planning, coordination, and sincerity from everyone involved. As Chief Minister, my goal is to see lasting peace in the region, but it must be peace that is meaningful and sustainable,” he added.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid growing public concern over security following the alleged threats, with several quarters calling for decisive action to ensure the safety of political leaders and citizens alike.
The state government has assured that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all appropriate steps to safeguard peace and stability in Meghalaya.
