SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, today, strongly condemned a “tragic and unfortunate” incident in West Garo Hills in which one youth lost his life while another sustained serious injuries.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, the Chief Minister said the state government views the incident with utmost seriousness. He informed that the West Garo Hills Police acted swiftly following the crime, carrying out multiple raids across different locations during the night.
“Three people have already been arrested, and the police are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend all others involved in this heinous crime,” Sangma said, assuring that no one responsible would be spared.
The Chief Minister further stated that the Deputy Commissioner has convened a meeting with members of civil society to constitute a peace committee, aimed at facilitating dialogue and ensuring that all related issues are addressed in detail.
Urging calm, CM Sangma appealed to citizens of Garo Hills to maintain peace and communal harmony. He cautioned against the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, and advised the public to verify information before sharing it.
“At this point in time, I want to assure the citizens that the police and the administration are fully engaged and doing their job. Strict action will be taken, and all those involved will be brought to justice,” the Chief Minister said.
An ACHIK NGO member died after being assaulted by unidentified persons at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills district on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, the incident was reported at around 2:00 pm on January 9, 2026. The victim, Dilseng M. Sangma, resident of Amokgre village in the Phulbari area of the district, sustained critical injuries in the attack. He was initially rushed to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being taken there.
The situation is being closely monitored by the state administration as efforts continue to restore normalcy and prevent any escalation of tension in the region.
