CM Unveils ₹38.92-Crore Smart Parking Projects in Shillong

The new facilities are part of a broader urban mobility overhaul, including the construction of a new Administrative City.

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, inaugurated two major infrastructure projects under the Shillong Smart City Mission—the District School Education Office-cum-Multilevel Car Park at Mawkhar and a fully mechanized Multilevel Car Park at Motphran.

The ₹38.92-crore projects will provide organized parking for 200 vehicles in two of Shillong’s busiest commercial areas, aiming to ease the city’s chronic traffic congestion.

Sangma identified traffic as Shillong’s top urban challenge and emphasized that earlier piecemeal solutions were insufficient.

He explained that a detailed 18-month mobility study using satellite and drone mapping led to a strategy focused on creating new parking zones, not just no-parking areas.

The new parking policy encourages individuals and communities to develop parking structures on their land, with government support of up to ₹1 lakh and local ownership of revenue and management.

The new facilities are part of a broader urban mobility overhaul, including the construction of a new Administrative City, with the Secretariat set to relocate by late 2027.

Sangma also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting diverse community and cultural events, reaffirming the state’s secular approach to public celebrations.

Looking ahead, Sangma called on citizens to welcome athletes and delegates as Meghalaya prepares to host the National Games, the state’s largest sporting event in over five decades.
