SHILLONG: Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader Dr Batskem Myrboh has welcomed the recommendation of the party’s State Election Committee proposing his name as the official candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha bye-election from the 1-Shillong Parliamentary Constituency.
The bye-election was necessitated following the sudden and tragic demise of sitting MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, whose passing created a significant vacuum in both the party and Meghalaya’s political landscape.
Speaking to reporters, Myrboh expressed gratitude to the State Election Committee for reposing confidence in him. While his name has been forwarded to the State Executive Committee for formal approval, he affirmed his readiness to take on the responsibility and represent the party in what is expected to be a closely watched electoral contest.
Describing Dr Syngkon’s death as a “great loss for the party and the State,” Myrboh acknowledged the weight of stepping into the role at a sensitive time. He pledged to uphold the VPP’s vision for the community and to work toward the socio-political upliftment of the region.
Confident about the party’s support base, Myrboh nevertheless cautioned against complacency. “We are 100 percent confident that the people will support us, but we are not overconfident,” he stated, urging party workers to treat the election with seriousness and dedication.
Highlighting the VPP’s commitment to clean and transparent politics, Myrboh pointed to the performance of the party’s MLAs and MDCs as proof of its people-centric governance approach.
“The party is on the right path, but hard work is essential to ensure a victory,” he added, calling on cadres and supporters to mobilize effectively across the constituency.
With political parties expected to intensify their preparations in the coming days, the Shillong Lok Sabha bye-election is shaping up to be a significant test of strength in the state capital region.
