CM Conrad Sangma Inspects 40,000-Seat Mawkhanu Football Stadium

The government expects the stadium to be completed by around 2027 in alignment with major upcoming events.

SHILLONG: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, visited Mawkhanu Football Stadium in East Khasi Hills district, to inspect the ongoing construction of the stadium. Also present during the visit was Minister, Sports & Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla.

This stadium is going to be the largest football stadiumin the country, with approximately 40,000 seats.”Mawkhanu Football Stadium will be an iconic structure,” CM Sangma said.

“Meghalaya is a football loving state and this structure will be a great incentive and boost to sports especially football sector,” he added.

The Chief Minister and the other dignitaries poured concrete in the North Stand of the stadium to mark the foundation laying while Fr Richard Majaw, led the prayer to invoke divine blessings and favour over the new structure.

The ambitious project will be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore. Upon completion, this stadium will be India’s first of its kind, designed exclusively for football.

The government expects the stadium to be completed by around 2027 in alignment with major upcoming events like the 39th National Games 2027 hosted by Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, the state has also planned to install 50 artificial football turfs by 2027, the highest in any Indian state. The chief minister recently informed that of these, 25 are already under construction and another 25 have received approval.

“This project is more than just infrastructure; it’s about creating a sustainable grassroots football ecosystem. The goal is to provide young athletes with a proper environment to train, play, and grow,” CM Sangma had said.
