SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has stated that the decision by eight United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs to join the BJP is an individual political choice and will not impact the stability or functioning of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
Addressing the media, Sangma said the development is a matter between the two parties and their MLAs, emphasizing that the coalition’s majority and operational strength remain unaffected.
Sangma clarified that no additional positions have been sought by the BJP, which now holds 10 MLAs, and asserted there is “no threat as of now” to his leadership.
He described the BJP’s growth as a natural democratic process, while affirming the National People’s Party (NPP) will continue to strengthen its own organizational base and contest future elections independently.

On issues raised by the BJP, including coal mining, the Chief Minister stressed that his focus is on finding solutions rather than seeking political limelight.
He noted that the government successfully fought to lift the coal mining ban in 2019, with current mining required to meet scientific, safety, and environmental standards.
While acknowledging unresolved challenges for miners, Sangma said the government is addressing concerns “one by one.”
