SHILLONG: Safety concerns have been raised over a section of the under-construction Shillong–Dawki four-lane highway after cracks and partial damage were reported in a retaining wall along one of the project stretches.
Construction is progressing steadily, with work from Umshyrpi to Bañiun already completed.
However, recent reports indicate that a portion of the retaining wall near the Umshyrpi Bridge has developed cracks. The construction company has responded by filling the affected area with cement as a temporary measure.
The damaged stretch has sparked apprehension among commuters and local residents, who worry that the weakened section could pose a serious risk, especially as heavy vehicles continue to use the road. Many fear the affected portion could collapse if immediate corrective measures are not taken.

The incident has also raised questions about whether the damage is due to poor construction practices or if the earth-filled embankment has not fully stabilized, possibly as a result of persistent heavy rainfall in recent days.

They have emphasized the need to ensure the safety of the large number of people who rely on the Shillong–Dawki highway every day.
