SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister and Minister in-charge of Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, has clarified the government’s stance on the sensitive issue of Lum Survey, stating that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Cantonment Board as it is military land. However, he confirmed that district authorities are actively enforcing necessary measures to curb illegal settlers within the area.
Speaking to the media, Prestone Tynsong stated that the State Government, through the district administration, is engaging in discussions with the CEO of the Defence establishment to strictly monitor and control the influx of people settling in the area.
The Deputy CM also informed that the Police are conducting periodic raids in Lum Survey to clamp down on illegal activities, including the drug trade, and to evict unauthorized settlers.
”The District authorities of East Khasi Hills are working tirelessly on this issue to ensure that drug traffickers do not turn Lum Survey into a safe haven,” said Tynsong. “The police are monitoring what is happening, who is coming to stay, whether they are illegal migrants or not.”
Regarding the ownership of Lum Survey, the Deputy Chief Minister revealed that the matter is currently sub judice (under judicial consideration). The Cantonment Board has filed a case in court concerning the ownership and status of the land at Lum Survey.
