Over the past five years, Meghalaya’s political landscape has undergone a profound transformation marked by party defections, realignments, and the dramatic decline of once-dominant forces.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), long the state’s primary regional power, suffered a major blow when eight of its 12 MLAs defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), slashing the UDP’s presence to just four MLAs and propelling the BJP’s strength to an unprecedented 10 seats in the Assembly.
This shift marks a historic high for the BJP, which previously maintained only a minimal presence in the state.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress experienced a total legislative wipeout.
Despite winning five seats in the 2023 elections, successive resignations and mergers—culminating in Leader of the Opposition Ronnie V. Lyngdoh’s departure to the NPP—left the Congress without a single MLA in the Assembly for the first time since 1972.

The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has capitalized on these upheavals, expanding its tally to 33 seats and securing an absolute majority on its own.
The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces lingering uncertainty over its future, despite Dr. Mukul Sangma’s public support, while the Voice of the People Party (VPP), which debuted in 2023 with four seats, remains a stable and emerging alternative.
As Meghalaya heads toward the 2028 elections, the state’s political center of gravity has shifted decisively toward the NPP and BJP, leaving traditional and regional parties to reassess their strategies in a rapidly evolving landscape.
