SHILLONG: In a decisive attempt to calm rising tensions over the Lumpondeng Island project, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday urged protesting groups at Malki to immediately withdraw their agitation, assuring that no permanent structures will be constructed on the ecologically sensitive island.

Addressing the controversy, Sangma firmly stated that the government has no intention of harming the environment and called on citizens to rely on verified facts rather than misinformation. “There is no question of any permanent construction on the island. The ecosystem will be preserved in its entirety,” he said.

Clarifying a key point of confusion, the Chief Minister explained that the proposed high-end hotel will not be built on Lumpondeng Island. Instead, construction will take place at the existing Orchid Resort site near Umiam Lake, which has been leased on a long-term basis to a designated agency for tourism development.

“The island will remain untouched. Its natural environment will be protected, and only temporary, eco-friendly structures—if required—may be allowed for specific tourism experiences,” Sangma said, adding that such structures would be made using natural materials and designed to have minimal environmental impact.

Responding to allegations of illegal tree felling, the Chief Minister clarified that the incidents were not linked to the project. Citing a police report, he said the act was carried out by a few individuals and not by any company associated with the development plan. “The companies have not even begun work. There is no connection between the project and the reported tree cutting,” he asserted.

Expressing concern over the ongoing protests, Sangma maintained that the government has been transparent from the outset and has already addressed the issues raised by stakeholders. He emphasized that the project forms part of a broader vision to boost tourism and economic growth in Meghalaya while maintaining environmental safeguards.

Calling for cooperation, the Chief Minister urged protestors to end their agitation and engage constructively. “This is about sustainable development—protecting our natural heritage while creating opportunities for our people,” he said.
