Family Members, KSU Approach MHRC Over Alleged Police Assault in Umkiang

The KSU also condemned the alleged actions of the Umkiang police and demanded appropriate action in accordance with the law.

SHILLONG: Family members of Joslymon Lyngdoh, along with members of the KSU Narpuh Circle, on Friday approached the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) alleging assault on the accused by police personnel at Umkiang.

According to the president of KSU Narpuh Circle, Phanuel Tongper, the family members of Lyngdoh sought the organisation’s assistance to accompany them in filing a complaint before the MHRC regarding the alleged incident.
He said Joslymon was accused of involvement in a bike theft case registered at the Rongpur Police Outpost in Silchar, Assam. Following this, Assam Police reportedly informed Umkiang Police, who subsequently apprehended the individual and brought him to the police station.
Tongper alleged that, as per the family’s information, Lyngdoh was assaulted by police personnel after his arrest, while another person taken in connection with the case was not subjected to similar treatment.
He further stated that the arrest took place around 12:30 pm, after which Assam Police later took custody of the accused.
He added that due to the alleged assault, Lyngdoh sustained injuries and was left in a disturbed mental condition, making him unable to communicate properly when seen by his family members.
Clarifying the organisation’s stand, Tongper said they were not attempting to defend the accused but were seeking justice and protection of human rights, adding that law enforcement agencies are not permitted to assault any individual, whether accused or detained.
He further said a written complaint has been submitted to the MHRC and assured that the organisation would continue to pursue the matter.
The KSU also condemned the alleged actions of the Umkiang police and demanded appropriate action in accordance with the law.
