the Commissionerate of Food Safety conducts such testing exercises regularly across the state to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers.

SHILLONG: The Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety, D.B.S. Mukhim has clarified that fish samples collected from across Meghalaya have been found safe for consumption, dispelling concerns and misinformation circulating on social media regarding the presence of heavy metals.

Mukhim informed that around 45 fish samples sourced from various districts of the state were sent to accredited laboratories in Kolkata for detailed analysis. The test reports confirmed that all samples were within permissible limits and complied fully with the norms prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). No heavy metals were detected in any of the samples.

She stated that the samples were collected strictly in accordance with FSSAI guidelines. In addition to laboratory testing outside the state, the Commissionerate of Food Safety also carries out regular on-the-spot checks through its ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ initiative, under which officials visit markets, collect samples, and conduct preliminary tests.

Mukhim further said that the Commissionerate would share the test reports with its counterparts in Assam, and joint discussions may be held to address public concerns and evolve a coordinated approach to prevent the spread of misinformation in the future.

She also clarified that routine testing has not detected formalin in fish, reaffirming that fish sold in Meghalaya markets is safe for consumption. However, the department continues to remain in touch with authorities in neighbouring states to ensure continued compliance.

Urging fish vendors to strictly follow regulations, Mukhim appealed to sellers to register with the Commissionerate of Food Safety, noting that operating without a valid licence is an offence under food safety laws. She added that registration can be completed either at the department office or on the spot with the assistance of food safety officials.

Advising consumers, Mukhim recommended basic precautions such as thoroughly washing fish before use. She also informed that egg samples recently collected from all districts were tested and found to be within prescribed standards, assuring the public that there was no cause for concern.

Reiterating the department’s commitment, Mukhim said that the Commissionerate of Food Safety conducts such testing exercises regularly across the state to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers.
