SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday voiced strong opposition to the appointment of Prof. S.K. Barik as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), urging Meghalaya Governor and Chief Rector of the university, C. H. Vijayashankar, to intervene.

After meeting the Governor at Lok Bhavan, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem told reporters that the council objected to the Ministry of Education’s decision to appoint Prof. Barik, the second senior-most professor at NEHU, as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor following the completion of the previous Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on July 26.

Synrem argued that this appointment violates NEHU Statute 2A, Clause 2, which stipulates that the senior-most professor should assume charge whenever the Vice-Chancellor’s post becomes vacant.

He said the role should have been entrusted to the senior-most professor, Prof. R. Khongsdier.

Claiming that the Ministry’s notification is inconsistent with the NEHU Act and its statutes, the HYC urged the Governor to take immediate action to address the issue.

According to Synrem, the Governor gave the delegation a patient hearing and assured them that he would raise the matter with the Ministry to ensure that all decisions regarding university administration comply with the NEHU Act and statutory provisions.

The HYC reiterated that appointments to key administrative positions in the university must strictly adhere to the rules and statutes laid down in the NEHU Act.
