From Assembly to the Streets: CM, Opposition Leaders Ditch Convoys for Historic Bus Ride

While political debates may be fiery inside the Assembly, when it comes to the progress of Meghalaya, everyone is on the same bus.

SHILLONG: In a powerful display of unity and a major leap toward a “Greener Shillong,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and leaders from across the political spectrum swapped their high-security convoys for public transport today.

Marking the end of the Budget Session, the state’s top leaders—including the Opposition—boarded a STEM bus together, sending a loud and clear message to the citizens of Meghalaya: Public transport is the future.

The day kicked off with high energy at the New Legislative Assembly complex in Mawdiangdiang, where the Chief Minister officially flagged off 84 brand-new buses. This fleet is a centerpiece of the “Ka Bos Jong Ngi” (Our Bus) initiative under the Urban Affairs Department.

55 Electric Buses has been introduced under the PM eBus Sewa scheme.

STEM buses are specifically designed to provide safe, reliable transport for students.

These aren’t your average buses. They are built for 2026, featuring — full Air-Conditioning for a comfortable ride, mobile charging points at every seat, real-time GPS Tracking so you never miss your ride, e-ticketing for a seamless, cashless experience.

“If we, as your representatives, can ride these buses, so can you. They are safe, modern, and the best way to move,” urged CM Conrad Sangma.

Political Rivals, One Destination

In a rare and heartening sight, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, CM Conrad K. Sangma, Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, and Deputy CMs Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar sat side-by-side.

The leaders traveled to New Shillong Township to inspect the progress of the new Secretariat and the ongoing Assembly construction. This “united commute” aims to inspire parents and students to choose STEM buses over private cars, a move essential to drastically reducing Shillong’s notorious traffic congestion.

The event wasn’t just about transport. In a boost to local entrepreneurship, the CM distributed 7 specialized Food Carts to beneficiaries of the Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK). This initiative aims to turn grassroots talent into thriving business owners, strengthening the local economy.

What’s Next for Commuters?

The Pilot Run has officially started on the IIM Shillong to Upper Shillong route.

Timing: 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily.

The goal is a cleaner, more sustainable, and traffic-free Shillong.

This historic day proves that while political debates may be fiery inside the Assembly, when it comes to the progress of Meghalaya, everyone is on the same bus.
