SHILLONG: The Meghalaya unit of the BJP is in the process of preparing proposals to be submitted to the Centre for the development of key religious and cultural sites under the PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan 2.0 schemes, senior party leader Alexander Laloo Hek said on Thursday.
Hek informed that the initiative follows recent discussions with central party leaders, after which consultations were held with state leaders and party workers to identify potential locations across Meghalaya.
Among the sites being considered are the Weiking Ground of Seng Khasi Kmie, the Ietnar site in Jowai associated with the Behdiengkhlam festival, the historic Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church, and Mawjymbuin Cave.
He said the objective is to promote these locations not only for their religious and cultural importance but also to enhance tourism potential and create economic opportunities for local communities.
Hek emphasised that any development undertaken would involve local bodies, with projects eventually being handed over to them for management and sustainability.
Clarifying that discussions are still at a preliminary stage, he stated that no formal proposals have been submitted so far, and there is currently no clarity on funding allocations. He also noted that while the party has not formally approached religious organisations, informal interactions have already taken place.
Inviting broader participation, Hek said stakeholders are welcome to submit suggestions, which the party is willing to facilitate and forward to the Government of India after further consultations.
