SHILLONG: BJP MLA from Pynthorumkhrah and former Health Minister A.L. Hek on Friday said the party is yet to finalise its candidate for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, even as several aspirants have expressed interest in contesting on the BJP ticket.
Speaking to reporters, Hek revealed that nine party members have already applied for the BJP ticket. He said the party leadership is expected to hold discussions next week to arrive at a decision, as the election schedule leaves limited time for candidate selection.
“We have not yet decided on the name of a candidate. The party will meet soon and decide who will be the BJP candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency by-election,” Hek said.
Responding to speculation about new entrants joining the BJP and seeking the party ticket, Hek said the party remains open to welcoming individuals who wish to join its ranks. However, he stressed that the final decision would be based on the candidate’s winnability and suitability to represent the party in the election.
“Anyone can apply. If somebody joins the BJP, we will welcome them. Ultimately, the party will decide who is the fittest and most winnable candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat,” he stated.
