SHILLONG: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has said the state government is giving top priority to the education sector and is working steadily to address the concerns of teachers across Meghalaya.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Meghalaya SSA School Association Central Body and the Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association at Madan Student, Rymbui said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has placed education among the key focus areas and has been actively responding to the demands of the sector.

He recalled that after assuming office in 2018, he received several representations from teachers highlighting issues such as delayed salaries, with some going unpaid for months. He noted that the government intervened promptly to resolve these concerns, ensuring support not only for teachers but also for students.

The Minister acknowledged existing challenges in the education system, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of proper classrooms, and uneven distribution of resources. He said these issues have impacted the quality of education and have prompted the government to take corrective measures.

Rymbui also pointed out that previous administrations often addressed teachers’ protests by raising salaries without a clear policy, whereas the current government is focusing on structured and long-term reforms. He expressed concern over the future of SSA teachers after the scheme ends but said proactive steps are being taken to address such uncertainties.

Highlighting the scale of the sector, he said the state has around 50,000 teachers catering to a population of about 36 lakh, indicating the structural challenges involved. He added that improving classroom environments remains crucial, as teachers play a central role in shaping students’ future.

Urging teachers to remain committed, he called on them to ensure quality education for students, particularly in classrooms with large numbers. He also assured that the government will continue to support and strengthen schools and colleges across the state.

The Minister further stated that efforts are underway through DERT to assist teachers in qualifying the MTET, especially with the September 1, 2027 deadline approaching, subject to any changes by the Supreme Court. He encouraged teachers to prepare sincerely and perform well.
