SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), today, informed that it has received over 70 applications from aspirants seeking Congress tickets for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections scheduled for 2026.

Addressing the media, MPCC President Vincent H. Pala said the surge in applications is being viewed as a strong signal of the Congress party’s renewed momentum in the Garo Hills region and has sparked speculation of a potential comeback for the party in the autonomous council.

Pala expressed confidence, stating that the overwhelming response reflects the continued trust of the people in the Congress despite increasing political competition.

“The response has been phenomenal. More than 70 candidates have come forward to contest under the Congress banner, which clearly shows that the people’s faith in the party remains intact,” Pala said.

However, Pala clarified that the party will not rush the announcement of its candidates. He said the final list will be declared only after the state government officially notifies the election schedule. With 70 aspirants competing for 29 seats, the MPCC will undertake a rigorous screening process to select the most suitable candidates.

Pala also informed that the party has already completed its groundwork across all districts in the Garo Hills, positioning itself for a strong electoral battle.

Political observers see the high number of ticket aspirants as a challenge to both the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), suggesting that the Congress is sensing a shift in political sentiment in the region.

“The Congress is not just participating; we are prepared for a decisive fight,” Pala asserted.

As preparations intensify, attention now turns to the MPCC and AICC leadership, who will finalize the 29 candidates tasked with leading the Congress campaign in the GHADC 2026 elections.
