SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) officially announced the results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination 2026 today, marking a significant milestone for the state’s education sector. In a stellar display of academic excellence, Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, Shillong, emerged as the premier institution by securing the top rank in the state-wide merit list.
The star performer of the year is Wangaal Lama from Gorkha Pathshala, who clinched the prestigious first position across Meghalaya by securing an outstanding 585 marks out of a total of 600. The school’s academic dominance was further solidified by the inclusion of two other students in the top merit list, with Aaditya Thapa securing the 7th position with 569 marks and Sharat Chettri taking the 8th position with 568 marks. Other top performers in the state include Vishal Kumar from Embree Rosebud Higher Secondary School, Tura, who secured the second position with 576 marks. The third position was shared by Prajukta Roy of Seven Set Higher Secondary School, Shillong, and Prinita Das of Pechon A Sangma Memorial Public Secondary School, Tura, both of whom scored 575 marks.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui extended his heartfelt congratulations to all the successful candidates, attributing this year’s high performance to the collective dedication of students, the guidance of teachers, and the constant support of parents.
The Minister highlighted that the results reflect a positive trend of academic improvement not just in urban centers, but across rural educational institutions as well. In a proactive move to support those who faced setbacks, the Minister announced that MBOSE has issued a notification for a special examination to be held in May. This initiative aims to provide an immediate opportunity for the approximately 6,000 students who did not pass to clear their examinations within the same academic year.
In terms of regional performance, East Khasi Hills emerged as the leading district with a pass percentage of 94.17 percent. It was followed by West Khasi Hills at 92.95 percent and South Garo Hills at 88.48 percent. Ri Bhoi district recorded a pass rate of 88.04 percent, while the Garo Hills regions saw varying results, with West Garo Hills at 77.75 percent, South West Garo Hills at 74.54 percent, and East Garo Hills at 72.33 percent.
A total of 48,623 candidates appeared for the examination this year, out of which 42,228 successfully passed, bringing the overall state pass percentage to 86.84 percent. A detailed breakdown of the categories reveals that Regular-1 candidates achieved a high pass rate of 93.30 percent, while Regular-2 candidates recorded 80.72 percent. Among private and non-regular candidates, the pass rates stood at 45.19 percent and 43.36 percent, respectively. From a demographic perspective, Scheduled Tribe (ST) male candidates achieved a pass rate of 86.19 percent, while female candidates slightly outperformed them with 86.50 percent. In the General category, male students recorded 94.14 percent and female students achieved 92.88 percent.
The 2026 results represent a sustained recovery in the state’s educational performance compared to the period between 2022 and 2024, where pass percentages fluctuated between 51 and 57 percent. This year’s figure of 86.84 percent is consistent with the high standards set in 2025, which saw a 87.10 percent pass rate. This upward trajectory underscores the successful synergy between the state government, MBOSE, and all educational stakeholders in fostering an environment of academic growth across Meghalaya.
