UMROI: Ri Bhoi Police have achieved a major breakthrough in the gruesome murder case of a 13-year-old girl whose body was discovered earlier this week in a forested area under the jurisdiction of Mawlasnai Police Outpost.

Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand Rathore confirmed that the suspect was apprehended during the intervening night of October 10 and 11.

The accused has been identified as Iainehskhem Kharsati, 22, a resident of a village under Mawlasnai Post Office within Umiam Police Station limits in Ri Bhoi District.

According to SP Rathore, Kharsati has confessed to the crime, admitting that he sexually assaulted the victim before murdering her.

“Legal procedures are currently underway, and the accused is in police custody,” Rathore said.

He added that the motive behind the crime is yet to be determined and will be established following further interrogation. The SP refrained from speculation, emphasizing that a thorough investigation is being carried out.
