SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has once again reaffirmed its historic opposition to uranium mining in Meghalaya.
Party President KP Pangniang reminded the public that the party’s resistance is deeply rooted, notably championed by former leaders such as the late Hopingstone Lyngdoh, who dedicated significant energy to the cause.
Pangniang emphasized that the HSPDP has never wavered from its anti-uranium stance.
He recalled that in August 2016, under the MUA II government led by then-Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, the HSPDP submitted its final memorandum on the issue. This sustained pressure led to successive government decisions to revoke all previous resolutions favoring uranium extraction, effectively halting all initiatives related to pre-mining activities at Domiasiat in South West Khasi Hills and shutting down related operations.

Reflecting on that significant victory, Pangniang expressed satisfaction that this policy has continued under the current administration.
He welcomed recent media reports quoting Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who stated unequivocally that there would be no further discussions on uranium mining in Meghalaya.
On behalf of the party, Pangniang formally congratulated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for his bold and immediate decision. He noted that this decisive stance sends a clear and reassuring message to the people of Meghalaya that the government has no intention of pursuing uranium mining in the state.
