SHILLONG: Activists from the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), today, stormed the BJP Meghalaya Pradesh office. The protest was triggered by controversial statements made by senior RSS and BJP leader Sunil Deodhar, which the council has slammed as a blatant attempt to incite communal discord and fracture the Khasi community.
The protesters gathered at the BJP headquarters, chanting slogans against “outsider interference” in local tribal affairs.
In a dramatic display of condemnation, HYC members torched an effigy of Deodhar, sending a clear message that his recent remarks have touched a raw nerve in the Khasi hills.
Speaking to the press amidst the chaos, HYC General Secretary Rhem G. Saiborne launched a scathing attack on the BJP leader. He accused Deodhar of using viral videos to spread misinformation and manipulate religious sentiments.
”We have seen the videos. This is nothing but a calculated move to mislead our people and create a rift using religion as a weapon,” Saiborne declared.
The HYC specifically highlighted Deodhar’s mention of Bah Rejoy, a respected elder from the Riwar region and a pillar of the Niam Khasi faith. The council alleged that Deodhar is “weaponizing” the names of local indigenous leaders to sow seeds of division between different religious groups within the Hynniewtrep community.
”Don’t be fooled by outsiders who speak our language,” Saiborne warned the public. “They may speak Khasi to win hearts, but when the dust settles, it is we, the locals, who will have to live with the consequences of this division.”
The HYC has demanded immediate and “stringent action” against their own party member.
They demanded a public apology, stating that Sunil Deodhar must issue an unconditional apology to the people of Meghalaya.
They also stated that the BJP State Unit must clarify its stance on whether it supports Deodhar’s “majoritarian” rhetoric.
