Shillong’s 4-Lane Dream: A Race Against Time & Dust at Turn of the Year!

One thing is certain: the residents of Upper Shillong are ready to trade their face masks for the open road!

SHILLONG: As the curtains draw on 2025, the eyes of the state are fixed on the crucial Umshyrpi to Bañiun (Upper Shillong) 4-lane project.

While Deputy Chief Minister in charge of PWD (Roads), Prestone Tynsong, had previously set a high-stakes deadline to complete this vital stretch by the end of December 2025, the ground reality today presents a tale of two halves: remarkable progress and dusty persistence.

The Grand Vision: Package 1 of the Shillong-Dawki Road

This 11.6-kilometer stretch is the “Crown Jewel” of the Shillong-Dawki Road project. Unlike the rest of the highway toward Dawki, which will be a 2-lane road with paved shoulders, this specific section is being transformed into a massive 4-lane expressway.

The goal? To permanently shatter the soul-crushing traffic jams of Upper Shillong and provide a seamless gateway for commuters.

A Tale of Two Stretches

An on-the-spot inspection on this final day of the year reveals a striking contrast in progress — the Success Story (Sawmer to Baniun): Travelers here can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! Work is nearly complete, and today, crews were seen busily installing Solar-powered streetlights, giving the area a modern, high-tech glow.

The Bottleneck (Umshyrpi to 4th Mile): This section remains the “Frontline.” Major earthworks, site clearing, and leveling are still underway. The heavy machinery is active, but for residents and commuters, the finish line still feels a few miles away.

Life in the “Dust Zone”: Voices from the Ground

While the promise of a world-class road is exciting, the local shopkeepers and residents are paying a “dusty” price.

“The dust is everywhere! It covers my goods, my clothes—you can barely recognize what I’m selling,” shared a local woman shopkeeper. “There are days I don’t even want to open. I just want them to finish so we can breathe again.”

Another vendor noted that while the construction companies occasionally spray water to keep the dust down, the dry winter air makes it an uphill battle. Despite the coughing and the cleaning, there is a surprising sense of resilient optimism.

“We are suffering now, but we are happy because we need this road,” said a local elder. “The traffic here has become a nightmare. We are willing to endure the dust today for a jam-free tomorrow. We hope the New Year brings the final completion!”

The “Flyover” Factor

As the 4-lane project nears completion, residents are already looking toward the next big challenge: The Umshyrpi-Barik bottleneck. Many locals suggest that once the 4-lane highway brings thousands of cars smoothly to Umshyrpi, a Flyover from Umshyrpi to Barik will be the only way to prevent a massive “funnel” effect. “If they can give us a flyover to bypass the city congestion, it would change Shillong forever,” remarked one resident.

What’s Next?

As we enter 2025, the Umshyrpi-Baniun project stands as a symbol of Meghalaya’s growth. It is a race for the NHIDCL to meet the Deputy CM’s timeline and a test of patience for the citizens. One thing is certain: the residents of Upper Shillong are ready to trade their face masks for the open road!
