SHILLONG: Former Home Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) spokesperson James P.K. Sangma said he would be honoured to represent Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha if the party and the people of the State consider him suitable for the role.
However, Sangma maintained that discussions on the party’s nominee are premature, as the term of Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha member, Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi, is yet to end. Kharlukhi’s tenure will conclude on June 21.
Kharlukhi, who represents the NPP, has already made it clear that he is not keen on seeking a second term, stating that he wishes to step away from active politics and make way for younger leadership. His decision has triggered speculation in political circles that either James P.K. Sangma or former Tura MP and senior NPP leader Agatha K. Sangma could be considered for the seat.
Terming the ongoing discussions as speculative, James Sangma said the matter lies entirely with the party leadership. “At this point, it is all speculation. If the party assigns me any responsibility, I am ready to accept whatever role it feels appropriate,” he said.
