SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) launched its Platinum Jubilee celebrations, marking 75 years of institutional resilience and indigenous identity with cultural performances, tributes to traditional healers, and honors for retired staff.
The event, held at the Council’s Shillong premises, drew political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) Winston Tony Lyngdoh reflected on the Council’s historic journey and urged current MDCs to lead with responsibility and courage.
The celebrations quickly shifted to pressing political issues, as Leader of Opposition Titostarwell Chyne used the occasion to call for substantive action from the Centre.
Chyne demanded the long-pending 125th Constitutional Amendment—intended to strengthen Autonomous District Councils—be enacted, criticizing central delays and insufficient respect for traditional boundaries.
He insisted that regional alignment must honor Khasi jurisdictions and argued for the retrieval of Scheduled Areas currently under normal administration.
The Platinum Jubilee milestone became a rallying point for the KHADC, not only to celebrate its legacy but to renew calls for greater legislative and administrative authority, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Khasi heritage and self-governance.
