Kharluki on NDA Rift and NPP Challenges

He noted the BJP’s recent growth in the state, drawing parallels to his past assessment of the TMC’s surge after Congress defections in 2023.

SHILLONG: Former Rajya Sabha MP and veteran NPP leader Dr. W.R. Kharluki has revealed that his growing disillusionment with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) stemmed from unfulfilled promises and a disconnect between central leadership’s assurances and actual outcomes.

Reflecting on his tenure, Kharluki described repeated experiences where union ministers offered polite assurances but failed to deliver, leading him to withdraw from NDA meetings altogether.

Kharluki declined to comment on the current NPP-BJP relationship, saying it’s for active party leaders to address.

He pointed to the recent parliamentary election results as a public verdict on the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government’s performance, suggesting that the electorate’s sentiment speaks louder than any political analysis.

He noted the BJP’s recent growth in the state, drawing parallels to his past assessment of the TMC’s surge after Congress defections in 2023.

He emphasized that ultimately, the public will judge the BJP’s true standing in the 2028 assembly polls.

Addressing speculation about other NPP leaders possibly shifting to Congress, Kharluki asserted that his political choices are personal and independent, and that the voters remain the ultimate authority.

He cited contrasting election results in the Garo Hills and Khasi-Jaintia Hills as evidence of changing political tides.

On allegations of corruption and dynastic politics within the NPP, Kharluki clarified that such issues were first raised by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) during the 2024 elections, not by him.
