SHILLONG: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) on Thursday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Shillong and reiterated its long-standing demand for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
During the meeting, the delegation submitted a memorandum along with supporting documents highlighting the need for constitutional recognition of the Khasi language.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KAS President Dr. D.R.L. Nonglait said the Union Home Minister did not make any commitment or provide a specific assurance regarding the demand. However, he noted that Amit Shah acknowledged the issue and informed the delegation that the concerned ministry has taken the matter seriously.
Dr. Nonglait said the Home Minister also indicated that Khasi is among the languages that are being considered for inclusion and would be examined as part of the ongoing process.
The KAS has been actively pursuing the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule, arguing that such recognition would help preserve, promote and strengthen the language at the national level.
