KSU Demands Resignation of EKH SP Vivek Syiem Over Alleged Extortion Row

The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) has demanded the resignation of East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem over the allegations.

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), on Saturday, put up banners at the wall of the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police’s office and the main gate of the Meghalaya Secretariat, raising allegations of illegal money collection by police personnel from truck drivers along the national highway at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai.

The KSU demanded the resignation of East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem over the allegations. The banners also questioned the authority under which the SP allegedly ordered the dismantling of a structure used by police personnel at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai.

The KSU further stated that if the location was connected to alleged illegal activities, it should be treated as a crime scene and should not be demolished without a proper investigation.

The banners carried messages directed at East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.

Police later removed the banners from the SP’s office and the Secretariat gates. At Khyndai Lad, police also removed banners while KSU members were putting them up.

The KSU members subsequently put up the banners again at Khyndai Lad, while police and CRPF personnel were looking at them. After waiting for some time, the KSU members left the area.

The KSU also put up banners at several other locations across Shillong as part of its protest.
